'Field Gay' competition celebrates Pride in Wilkes-Barre

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A fresh, active way to enjoy Pride month while embracing your inner child kicked off at Kirby Park on Saturday. The Rainbow Alliance is hosting its first-ever Field Gay, a grown-up Field Day celebrating pride, community, and play.

Adults took on obstacle courses, relay races, and yes, even balloon-sitting contests.

"There's really not anything that gets that field day vibe again like you did when you were a kid, but yeah, so we've definitely seen a lot of people very interested in doing it," Rainbow Alliance Executive Director Shea Hughes told 28/22 News.

"It's a common misconception that events held by the Rainbow Alliance are just for LGBTQ+ people, or it's just if I'm gay, or my kid is gay, but it's not, it's for allies also, everybody's welcome," Event Participant Samantha Harris said.

The event drew about 20 participants with randomly assigned teams to encourage new connections.

Organizers say they hope for even better weather for when they plan their next Field Gay event.
