SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — There was an emotional farewell on Sunday in South Scranton at a longstanding house of worship. A church that has been part of the community for generations has held its final mass.
A triumphant sound filled the Nativity of Our Lord Church on Sunday afternoon, a house of worship that was founded in 1905.
Its roots stretch back even further to 1904, when construction began under Father James O'Reilly.
Neighborhoods in South Scranton grew up around churches like this one, making them more than just places of worship; they became anchors for entire communities.
"The community that has gathered here for 120 years has done so in faith and love. So to lose this place is a challenging thing and a thing of great sadness," Nativity of Our Lord Church Pastor Father Jonathan Kuhar stated.
The upper church, where most of this farewell was held, is known for its stunning architecture, soaring stained glass, marble columns, and beautiful exterior.
But rising costs and dwindling attendance forced a difficult decision. After years of discussion, the parish chose to consolidate into nearby Sacred Hearts Church.

Some parishioners at Nativity are no strangers to recent church consolidations.
"We've been through a lot of consolidation. About a year and a half ago, we consolidated Sacred Hearts with Nativity to make one parish. It's a shame to see the church close. It is a beautiful church," Scranton resident Arnold Schiavi explained.
The final mass was full of emotion, music, and reflection as families said goodbye to a sacred space that shaped their lives.
"My family has been attending this church since it was founded. So much of my life is wrapped up around this church. It's very sad, but we will continue as a church, just in a different place," Katie Kearney from Scranton said.
Even as the doors close, one final time. The memories made here won't fade. For the people of Nativity, this church was, and always will be, home.
The diocese says parishioners are welcome to continue worshiping at nearby Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church on Prospect Avenue.
