Civil Rights Outreach public meeting held in Hazleton

HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Listening and helping solve the community's problems: That was the goal of a virtual public meeting in Luzerne County. The Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission hosted the event in Hazleton on Wednesday afternoon.

The Civil Rights Outreach Division addresses civil tensions, conflicts, and incidents in communities across the state and promotes anti-racism through education and outreach.

Their main focus is enforcing state laws that prohibit discrimination.

"Ensuring that people have a place to come to, to express their concerns. We are this state agency. We've existed for 70 years, coming this October, you know, we're the state's highest civil rights enforcement agency, so we want to ensure that these kinds of spaces provide you an avenue to come and speak to us about those concerns," the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission Civil Rights Outreach Coordinator, Hector Luis Torres-Diaz, told 28/22 News.
