FALLS TOWNSHIP, WYOMING COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Fun at a popular local boat launch has gotten out of control.
Now, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) is stepping in to do something about growing issues happening there.
The launch is meant for two things: fishing and boating, but as we reported last year, there was more going on, much of it illegal.
Now the PA Fish and Boat Commission is debating whether restrictions are enough to keep everyone happy.
Artist responds to residents’ ‘disturbing’ mural critique
A muddy, high, and fast moving Susquehanna River flows past Wyoming County's West Falls Boat Launch in Falls Township.
It's a relaxing setting for area resident Lori Yudiskas.
"It's very quiet and it's very peaceful," said Yudiskas.
But last year around this time, the boat launch was bumping.
Except, in ways that were against the law and unsafe.
Large social gatherings, swimming, and loads of trash crowded the area.
"This wasn't a small problem. There were more than 500 vehicles that were told to turn around and leave if this is what you are going to use this property for," explained Mike Parker, Communications Director, Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.
This prompted the commission to announce this month it would restrict public vehicle access and prohibit powered boat use access to the boat launch from June 10 - September 10.
But since that decision Parker says, his agency also understands not everyone should have to pay a consequence.
"As an agency, we just want to make sure that the property is being used for its lawful purpose and that we are trying not to punish the law abiding boaters and anglers from using this property while also trying to keep unlawful activity under control," commented Parker.
So now, Parker says the commission is delaying the restrictions and is looking to come up with the best possible solution within the next few weeks.
Signs like these are put up all over the launch but Parker says enforcing the laws has been a challenge and has put a strain on law enforcement.
"I feel it's a shame they have to go to these extremes because this boat launch has been here forever," expressed Yudiskas.
Yudiskas hopes the gates can stay open, but agrees this has gone on for way too long.
'I think its very unfortunate for everyone who uses it and uses it responsibly in the way it should be but it's a persistent, consistent problem," added Yudiskas.
Parker tells me they hope to make a decision in a few weeks.
Meantime the boat launch is open for fishing and boating.
