Walk for fathers steps off in Scranton

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — It's all about dads Sunday, and one group did something different to celebrate: A walk for fathers, led by fathers. In Scranton, the Fathers Matter Support Group at Outreach Center for Community Resources held its first-ever Father's Day Walk.

It's a grant-funded event with a goal of giving dads a voice and a space to heal.

"It's made me a better parent, it's got me through stuff, it's made me see, you know, holding onto some bad times is not healthy, and just let 'em go and enjoy myself with my kids," Clarks Summit Center Member Joshua Drob said.

Around two dozen fathers and family members took part, walking from the outreach center to Courthouse Square and back.

One member spoke about what it means for him to be a father today.

"It means everything, I take a lot of pride in being able to make the changes necessary to break cycles, and curses, and you know being able to give things to my daughter that I didn't have, and to be present," Avoca Center Member Sean Ramirez told 28/22 News.

Center staff say they hope to expand the walk in future years and continue supporting fathers on the path to positive change.
