WAYNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Wayne County officials are warning residents of a scam where a caller claims to be a sheriff in an effort to get peoples money.
On Tuesday, the Wayne County District Attorney, A.G. Howell, announced that multiple residents from Wayne County reported getting phone calls from someone claiming to be a Wayne County Sheriff.
Authorities say the caller tells the resident they missed jury duty and if they don't pay $3,000, they will be arrested.
Officials explain that the caller instructs the resident to go to Walmart and put the money into a Walmart account.

District Attorney Howell and Wayne County Sheriff Rosler assure all Wayne County residents all those calls are not from the Wayne County Sheriff's Department and are a scam for the caller to get people's money.
Authorities ask residents not to go along with the calls and not to send them any money.
Officials say the sheriff's department will never call residents and ask for money in exchange for not getting arrested.
If you were a victim of this scam, the Wayne County District Attorney urges you to contact your local police department or the Wayne County Detectives at (570) 253-4912.
