WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — First through eighth-grade kids traded their studies for college courses on Tuesday in Luzerne County. Hundreds of students had the chance to experience life as a college student for the day at Wilkes University.
It's all thanks to the SHINE after-school program.
Kids got the chance to try their hand at age-appropriate STEM-related activities, focusing on dozens of careers, like nursing, engineering, and TV.

"Just trying to get these kids involved and be active over those summer months. To close that education gap is very important, but maybe just the kids need social, socialization. So again, a day is great. I'm sure if it was a week camp or something, they'd love that, you know," SHINE program Heights Elementary Lead Teacher Lauren Medvec told 28/22 News.
"I want to be a nurse, baby deliverer. (And why is that? ) Because I like babies and they're adorable," Pittston Area fourth grader Zuri Reed said.
SHINE is a nationally recognized program working to create a smooth transition from preschool to high school.
