Festival kicks off summer celebrations in Drums

DRUMS, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Hundreds of people celebrated summer and filled Freedom Park in Drums Saturday afternoon.

The Butler Township Recreation Board hosted its Summer Kickoff Festival at the park located on Mill Mountain Road.

The event included 30-plus vendors featuring food, crafts, and clothing. Karaoke, a DJ, and live music packed the pavilion.

The summer kickoff event was a first of its kind for the township.

"We have had a fall festival before, and we felt that the summertime would be also a perfect opportunity to get everyone from the community together," Butler Township Recreation Board Member and Organizer Tracey Smith explained.

"You roll the dice and see, you know, what will happen, you know, we came out here not knowing the area, we don't know anyone here. And again, it was just about coming out of our comfort zone of Wyoming Valley and try to expand our business a little bit," Mary's Midgees Vendor Ann Mikols told 28/22 News.

Organizers say they hope to hold this event every year to kick things off just before busy Fourth of July celebrations.
