Police investigating after dogs found dead in VFW

KINGSTON TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A Luzerne County man is under investigation after two dogs were found dead inside a hot truck outside a local VFW.

Police say Jerry Rynkiewicz left his two golden retrievers in a parked truck while he was inside the Exeter VFW on Sunday.

With the dangerous heat that day, the dogs didn't survive.

On Friday, officers served a search warrant at his Kingston Township home, where they found signs of disturbed earth and a smell of decomposition.

28/22 News spoke with the local SPCA about the dangers of leaving pets unattended in a vehicle.

"If you must travel with your animal, I would not leave them in the vehicle unattended. I would always leave a responsible individual with them because that at least provides the opportunity for an immediate outlet if the animal should get overheated," SPCA of Luzerne County Executive Director Todd Hevner told 28/22 News.

No charges have been filed yet, but the investigation is ongoing.
