Car show helps raise money for local parks in Luzerne County

SWOYERSVILLE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Cars, community, and a good cause: That was the vibe in Luzerne County on Sunday. About 100 cars rolled into Roosevelt Park for the Third Annual Swoyersville Parks and Recreation Car Show.

Classic cars, modern rides, even a few custom creations, came out to show off, hang out, and help raise money for local park upgrades.

The event was put on by the borough's parks and rec board and NEPA Cars and Coffee.

While the last couple years brought in a few hundred bucks, this year they're aiming for a thousand.

"This year we've got more of a turnout than we've ever had, so I'm excited to see how much we've raised," Syrena Mey, with the Swoyersville Parks and Recreation Board, stated.

"The car community is great, they all turn out, and they all love hanging out with each other. And raising a good amount of money for especially stuff like this," Shawn Mapes with NEPA Cars & Coffee said.

"Gives kids and other adults a chance to see cars that they don't normally see on the street every day, and then when you bring it to a community like this where there's a sports complex and local businesses, you do everything you can to support the local community," JJ Sonday, who brought their car from Exeter, told 28/22 News.

If you missed it on Sunday, the board's next big fundraising push is the Chicken Wing Fling on July 26 and 27.

It will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., also at Roosevelt Park.

Organizers hope to raise between $10,000 and $15,000 there.
