WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Power has been restored to the area surrounding Public Square after a gas leak shut it down Wednesday night.
Power has been restored to downtown Wilkes-Barre, and all nearby businesses can now fully operate, stated Mayor George Brown.
Firefighters told 28/22 News that they shut down power in and around the Wilkes-Barre area while they investigated a gas leak near Public Square.
Over 3,700 customers in the Wilkes-Barre area were without power around 9:00 p.m.

City officials say the eastbound lane of West Market from North Franklin Street will be opened however, the westbound lane will remain closed for additional repairs to the natural gas line.
The city also notes that heavy equipment will remain at the West Market Street and Public Square site, and repairs will continue throughout the day on Thursday, late afternoon/early evening.
Wilkes-Barre Farmers Market will open at 10:00 a.m., but there will not be parking from North Main Street to Market Street.
One travel lane around Public Square from North Main to South Main will reopen to all traffic, but the city advises travelers to avoid Public Square to alleviate congestion.
