Sprucing up cemetery in Scranton for holiday weekend

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local cemetery is spruced up on Saturday thanks to volunteers willing to give up part of their holiday weekend. More than a dozen volunteers, including some armed with weed trimmers, took to Washburn Street Cemetery in Scranton on Saturday.

They are with the non-profit Christmas Miracles from Heaven. They trimmed tall weeds and grass covering headstones, mowed the grass, and removed branches and other debris.

The cemetery had a reputation for being neglected in the past, and the group wanted to change that.

"The grass was unbelievably high and the weeds were unbelievably high and it was so, like, not maintained for almost, like, 10 years, but then we came out here and put our efforts together to get it all cleaned up," Avoca Volunteer Sean Dougherty told 28/22 News.

"It's amazing to see all the families now being able to come and visit their loved ones and they haven't done that. One family reached out to me. They haven't been to their loved one's grave in almost ten years. So, to know that we're making that reality happen for them is just so overwhelming," Christmas Miracles from Heaven Founder and President Amy Cusick explained.

'Christmas Miracles from Heaven' says it cleans up this cemetery once a month on Scranton's west side.
