Annual Fireman's Picnic kicks off, draws crowds in Lackawanna County

COVINGTON TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — It's one of the biggest events of the year in one local community and the biggest fundraiser for the Covington Fire Company. The Fireman's Picnic is now underway, and Tuesday kicked off with a crowd favorite.

The carnival grounds opened at 6 with food stands, carnival rides, and a beer tent, drawing in families from around the area.

Organizers say the week-long event raises nearly $50,000 in profit, money the fire company relies on to fund operations year-round.

Tuesday night featured a car show with dozens of classic and custom vehicles.

Volunteers say they'll start planning next year's picnic as soon as this one ends, because the turnout keeps growing.

"It's a lot to get to this set up, but the nights of the picnic, it's worth it when you see the kids having a good time and the adults having a good time. Hopefully, the weather holds out and we get a good crowd," Fire Chief Brad Jones told 28/22 News.

"Definitely a very welcoming environment. Everyone's very kind, the rides are fun. Food is amazing, and it all benefits Covington, so it's for a good cause in my opinion," Moscow resident Hailey Lesh explained.

The fun continues all week, with the fireman's parade on Thursday, live music on Friday, and fireworks wrapping things up on Saturday.
