MOCANAQUA, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A traditional Polish food staple is taking center stage this week in Mocanaqua, Luzerne County. Some seasoned cooks are preparing thousands of pierogis for the St. Mary's church homecoming picnic.
Church parish members and volunteers are hard at work in Mocanaqua, coming together to make pierogis, thousands of them.
They're being prepared for the St. Mary's Church Homecoming Picnic next month. Volunteers are getting a head start on the delicious delicacies because they're homemade and take time.

"We have to set up the basement so it's ready to go, and getting the equipment in place. The cheese is the farmer's cheese. Eggs, egg yolks, chives, salt, sugar. And then we make the circles with the tins. Somebody made those tins, I don't know how many years ago," explained volunteer Mary Beach.
They also have plenty more work to do.
"We have homemade pierogis, potato, cheese, sauerkraut. We do, we make our own noodles for the halushki. We do piggies, meatballs. It's all homemade," said Beach.
The event is a tradition in the area. Organizers say it wouldn't be possible without dedicated volunteers.
"We do have a lot of people from Shickshinny, the surrounding area, that come out and help us. They don't belong to our church, and they help out at the picnic also," said Beach.
The church picnic is scheduled for August 30 and 31, just around the corner from the church on Lee Road.
There will be three kinds of pierogis at the homecoming picnic: cheese, potato and cheese and sauerkraut.
