WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Giving back to those in need is priceless, and on Wednesday, organizers and volunteers came together to hold a community closet free of charge at The Wright Center in Wilkes-Barre.
28/22's Joe Mason has a closer look at how the center is giving back.
The Wright Center opened its Community Closet for the community at its Wilkes-Barre location on Wednesday.
It serves as a space for those in need to pick up anything from shirts, winter coats, shoes, dress clothes, and more, all for free.
"Right now, people shouldn't have to, but they're making choices: Food, clothing, medications. We don't want them to have to think about that. So, if we can lighten their load a little bit, there's kids' clothes, there's kids' jackets. We want to make sure everyone, I know it's July and we're sweating, but to make sure that we get ready for the winter," The Wright Center Community Relations and Development Director, Geraldine McAndrew, explained.
Around 75 people came by for clothes and other supplies.
"There are a lot of people out here that don't have housing. They've either been burnt out of their house, lost their place of living. It's the best thing they ever started here. People do need help, and there's a lot of places out here with resources, but they don't have enough supplies," stated Eric Dietrich, patient, The Wright Center.
Organizers say this resource is even more important now with the recent closure of the Keystone Mission.
"It's sad, it's very sad because people need the help," voiced McAndrew.
The next Community Closet will be held at the Honesdale Community Center on August 5.
In addition to the Clothes Closet, The Wright Center also hosts food giveaways and other health-related events.
