SUGAR NOTCH, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— One man was rescued after falling from a rope ladder while trying to exit a mineshaft, according to Hanover Township Fire Department.
According to Hanover Township Fire Chief Temarantz, crews were called to the Brodhead Avenue around 1:00 a.m. Saturday morning after two men were exploring a mine shaft, and one fell off a rope ladder approximately 40 feet down the shaft.
Blighted property in limbo as neighbors raise concern
The responding officer then called for a tech rescue team in assisting to get the men out of the mineshaft using a rope system, according to officials.
Chief Temarantz says that the shaft has been there since around the early 1900s.
The man was taken to a local hospital and treated for injuries, according to officials.
Chief Temarantz says it is unknown why the men were in the mineshaft to begin with.
