Hillclimb race brings together a community for 119 years

LAUREL RUN, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Engines echoed near Wilkes-Barre this weekend as drivers took on one of the steepest and most historic racing events in the country.

Competitors navigated a twisting, half mile stretch of east Northampton Street for the Giants Despair Hillclimb.

The road has challenged racers for 119 years, earning its spot as one of the oldest motorsport events in the country.

Racers had to navigate turns like the infamous "Devil's Elbow," known as the toughest part of the course.

Drivers say it is one of the most difficult climbs they face all year.

Organizers say the tradition is much more than just racing up a hill.

"For the local community, it really is like a Christmas, a New Years, we try to put on a festival. This is not just a race," exclaimed Daniel jones, Treasurer, Giants Despair Hillclimb Association.

"Don't crash, that's the number one thing, and go fast, that's the second thing. Feels great to have everybody here and I think everybody loves it, and hopefully we can get a bigger crowd next year," hoped Josh Company, racer, Shavertown.

Organizers say the tradition will keep climbing, bringing racers and fans back to Laurel Run again next July.
