WEST PITTSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Vice-President J.D. Vance will make a stop in Northeastern Pennsylvania tomorrow to talk about the recently passed so-called "Big Beautiful Bill."
He will speak at Don's Machine Shop in West Pittston.
The event is expected to begin at around 12:30.
The eyes of the world will be on northeastern Pennsylvania tomorrow as Vice J.D. Vance will visit Luzerne County.
Don's machine shop on Ash Street in West Pittston will be the stage for Vice-President J.D. Vance on Wednesday. Donnie Eifert Junior, the owner, says he got a call last Thursday from the white house asking him if the Vice President can hold the event at his business. He says he didn't have to think twice.
"We are very very honored... it's beyond words how honored we are that he chose us to come here. I think it's great for the business, it's great for West Pittston...it's great for northeastern Pennsylvania," said Eifert Jr.
The Vice President will talk about the so-called "Big Beautiful Bill," which passed the House of Representatives by a slim margin. The legislation continues to be the focus of controversy, much of which centers around healthcare, specifically Medicaid. Thomas Shubilla is chairman of the Luzerne County Democrat Party.
"We have Medicare-Medicaid SNAP benefits that are now gone, and the average person in Luzerne County, this is going to hurt somebody that you know, hurt somebody that you love. This bill isn't very beautiful," said Shubilla.
Congressman Rob Bresnahan says the bill addresses waste, fraud, and abuse.
"So when it comes down to people getting kicked off Medicaid, the work requirements list is so expansive it even includes inmates in public institutions. I mean people that are concerned about owning benefits that are still due to them will continue to receive that, who will not be eligible are able-bodied individuals who choose not to work," said Rep. Bresnahan.
There will be traffic detours and road closures in the West Pittston area, as well as on I-81 near the Wilkes-Barre-Scranton International Airport and Route 11.
