Rodeo riders take over Columbia County

BENTON, COLUMBIA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A big crowd, high energy, and a whole lot of dirt. A highly anticipated annual tradition kicked off Tuesday night in one local community.

Every summer, the Benton Rodeo grounds transform into a national stage for riders, and this year, they're celebrating four decades of tradition.

From first-timers to national qualifiers, Tuesday's show gives cowgirls a chance to compete for time and for pride.

"It's just a different feeling being here. We get all these young people involved. When we have the actual rodeo, we have contestants coming from all over the United States," says Melvin Parks.

And they're not just coming from the U.S., riders from Canada and even Australia made the trip to Columbia County.

Organizers say it takes months of daily training to get a horse ready for competition.

The Benton Area Rodeo Association has more than 600 local members working behind the scenes from event setup to running competitions and serving crowds.Helping make sure the event is a success.

"I feel great. It means I've done something right. They're here, they're having fun, they're enjoying themselves, that's what it's all about," says Parks.

Proceeds from the rodeo go right back into the region -- supporting scout troops, fire companies, and local charities throughout the year.

"It's pretty overwhelming because we're a pretty small community. The kids are great. You see little girls walking by with cowgirl boots and hats. Everybody's into the moment," says Debbie Dressler.

And it's a moment many here look forward to every summer.Riders say the crowd support makes a real difference, especially for young competitors.

"I have a bunch of people in town who come out and support me. It's just amazing to feel so supportive and have a bunch of people here to watch you," said Alexa Roberts.

The Benton Rodeo continues through Sunday, rain or shine.
