Business making light of sinkholes on Horton Street

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Construction is continuing on two sinkholes in Wilkes-Barre, both are on Horton Street in two different locations.

While crews work to repair them, one business owner is managing his frustrations in a fun way.

28/22's Joe Mason spoke with him about the project.

"Yes traffic isn't as plentiful as it used to be, but it's nice that the road kind of ends at wet paint now," said Scott Paull.

Scott Paull is the Owner of Wet Paint Printing and Design.

His business neighbors the two sinkholes on Horton Street, forcing his business to close on Monday.

For him, this isn't anything new. He says there's been four sinkholes that have impacted his life and livelihood.

Construction continues on sink hole that opened up Monday

"The first one opened up at about the midsection of my building probably end of January, beginning of February. Then one opened up a little closer down by the end of Carey Avenue there. Two weeks after that, the third hole opened up and they're not even halfway through filling that and then the fourth one opened up," stated Paull.

With each new sinkhole that opens up, it raises more concerns.

"At some point, it could become a safety issue if it comes close to the building. For now, it's been isolated to the street, but as it creeps closer to a sidewalk, at what point is there anything to stop it from taking the side of my building," worried Paull.

Paull is managing these frustrations in a fun way.

A way he knows better than most.

"We made a batch of shirts after the third hole opened up. The "Hortonocalypse" shirts. I gave some to the construction workers, to some of the city workers that were down here. We're making some modifications, you know. Now we're on four times. We got a collapse and we're putting our tour dates on the back of the shirt," joked Paull.

According to PennDOT, the storm pipe has been repaired, and utility work is now in progress at the Horton street intersection between Huston and Carlisle streets.

Storm pipe repairs are also ongoing with utility repairs to follow at the Horton Street intersection between church and warren streets.

I spoke to several construction workers, who say they're not entirely sure when this project will be complete.
