Benefit to raise awareness for distracted driving

ELMHURST TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— A benefit is being held Friday and Saturday remembering a young man who tragically lost his life in a car crash more than five years ago.

28/22's Joe Mason has more on his story and the benefit.

"You know, it's never gonna be normal, but it's a new normal. It's just knowing that he's not here," explained Sandie Bisignani, Brandon Bisignani's mother.

Brandon Bisignani was just 27 when he lost his life in a car crash in 2019.

Since his passing, his family has been holding different events to give back to the community and raise awareness on the dangers of distracted driving.

Local community takes a stand against proposed data center

"Brandon was on his way home from work and he was driving distracted. He was in a group text message with some friends and he slammed into the back of a stopped tractor trailer. Not only are we trying to raise money for graduating North Pocono seniors, but we're also trying to bring awareness not to drive distracted. So, if you know someone's driving, don't text them. That can wait, it's not that important," stated Bisignani.

The North Pocono grad loved volleyball. His passion and dedication for the game earned him conference MVP and all-state recognition, but more than anything else, he loved.

"Brandon was a kind and caring soul. He loved his family, he loved the sport of volleyball. He loved his animals, his friends. Brandon was an all around great guy," said Bisignani.

The first part of the fifth annual Brandon Bisignani Memorial Scholarship fundraiser features live music and basket raffles.

A ten dollar donation is appreciated from attendees.

All proceeds will go toward the Brandon Bisignani Memorial Scholarship Fund, which will benefit a graduating North Pocono senior to further their education.

Brandon's mom says the support from the community has been heartwarming.

"It's actually overwhelming to see the support of my community, of my family, my friends, of Brandon's friends. It's amazing," expressed Bisignani.

Friday's event is being held until 9:00 p.m. At the Y Knot in Elmhurst Township.

Saturday, the family is hosting the fifth annual Brandon Bisignani volleyball tournament.

They hope to keep both of these traditions going for years to come.
