Owner charged after pit bull kills dog, attacks others

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The owner of a pit bull is facing charges after police say the dog killed another dog and has attacked multiple people.

Officers began investigating reported incidents of a pit bull attacking multiple people in Scranton.

9-year-old dies at The Boardwalk in Hersheypark

On July 12, a woman was walking her Chihuahua when the pit bull came from the backyard of a house on Stephen Avenue and attacked them, police reported.

The woman was almost bitten in the face while trying to separate the two dogs. The Chihuahua died as a result of the attack, as stated in the affidavit.

According to the Scranton Police Department, Heather Bogaski, the owner of the pit bull, stated that her yard fence was broken, which is how the pit bull escaped. Bogaski also admitted that this incident is the second documented attack the pit bull committed.

Previously, in March 2024, animal control was called to Front Street for two men who were attacked by a pit bull. Bogaski told animal control that her 3-year-old son had opened the door, and the pit bull ran outside, investigators stated.

Then, on July 16, officers were called to Bogaski's residence when a man claimed a pit bull bit him on the back of his leg, court documents reported. Bogaski again claimed that her son left the door open, allowing the dog to exit their home, officers stated.

Bogaski has now been charged with confinement and control, and she has been ordered to vaccinate the pit bull against rabies.
