HAZLE TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Weekend school supply giveaways are a sure sign we are getting closer to the start of the fall semester.
Families waited in line outside the Verizon retailer Round Room near Hazleton for a School Rocks backpack giveaway.
Many of the backpacks available were clear in order to comply with school district regulations.
The event also featured a couple of freebies, including haircuts at no cost from Cabrera Barber Shop.
The owner says he wanted to give back as a way of supporting the community that supports him.

"So, he feels that if this would have been offered to him when he was younger, he would have truly enjoyed this and it would have been a beneficial experience. So he wants to be able to provide that for the youth today," Cabrera Barber Shop Owner Frankeli Cabrera stated.
"It saves parents a lot of money. I mean, if you think about it, clear backpacks don't last, so they're being replaced throughout the year. So, for us to be able to give a fresh one to start with, they don't have to spend on. They can purchase anything else," TCC/Verizon District Manager Ronny Jerez told 28/22 News.
Organizers expected to hand out more than 300 backpacks on Sunday at the free giveaway near Hazleton.
