2 displaced after South Abington Township fire

SOUTH ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Two were displaced after a house fire in South Abington Township Wednesday night.

A supervisor with the Lackawanna County Communications Center told 28/22 News crews were called at about 6:45 p.m. Wednesday to the 700 block of Layton Road for a reported working structure fire.

South Abington Fire Department led the response to the house fire with help from the Scott Township and Clarks Summit Fire Departments, officials told 28/22 News.

There are no reported injuries at this time, according to authorities.

Landmark Hazleton church to be demolished after fire

Chinchilla Hose Company Assistant Fire Chief Michael Pehonich told 28/22 News when crews arrived on scene, they found the fire coming from the rear bedroom of the house.

Assistant Fire Chief Pehonich added the fire was extinguished in under 20 minutes, and there is moderate smoke and water damage.

The home is currently unlivable, but not a total loss, according to Assistant Fire Chief Pehonich.

So far, officials say the cause of the fire is unknown at this time and the state police fire marshal is investigating.

Assistant Fire Chief Pehonich says two people were displaced because of the fire and are getting help from the Red Cross.
