DUPONT, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A new blacktop basketball court and walking trail is now open in Dupont.
The community turned out on Saturday for the ribbon-cutting, celebrating the new court and trail on Hemlock and Walnut streets.
The first phase cost about $160,000 and was all funded by grants and help from state legislators.
The old court was considered deplorable, and the Dupont Council President says a walking trail was needed since people were starting to walk the streets.
He also hopes the upgrades send a message.

"That we are a community, we're all neighbors, friends, and we are close-knit, it's always been a close-knit town, and I hope it just stays that way," Dupont Council President Stanley Knick Jr. said.
"There's not any other blacktop court, it's like a real streetball, basketball, blacktop, and what more can you ask for? It's smooth, good balance for you to dribble move off of, it's actually gonna bring more people out, bring the community out more," event attendee and father of three Gerald Frazier told 28/22 News.
The Dupont Council President says their next plan is likely a pickleball court, a pocket park, and some rides for the kids.
They hope to raise the $200,000 needed to build them by next year.
