Splash of community spirit at NEPA Run the River 5K

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — There was a splash of community spirit on Saturday in Wilkes-Barre as runners and walkers supported children in need. Nearly 75 participants hit the trail at Kirby Park for the Second Annual NEPA Run the River 5K and Fun Walk.

The race near the Susquehanna featured volunteers armed with water guns to keep runners cool.

The event raised money for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Wyoming Valley as a kickoff event to NEPA's downtown day.

The non-profit trains advocates to stand up for children facing abuse or neglect in the court system.

"Obviously, they try to get as many people as they can, and they're trying to raise money for whatever is important to them, so any 5K that you guys can get out and just do to help whatever cause, it helps even a little bit. Just to show up, that's another thing, you don't gotta run fast," Duryea Runner Dominick Angradi said.

"It's great to always support charities, I'd highly recommend once again coming out and doing these cause you never know who's in the need for something or what the struggle is they're supporting, so it's always a great thing to come out and support it," Exeter Runner Colby Walsh told 28/22 News.

Organizers say they hope to match last year's $20,000 fundraising total. All proceeds go directly to CASA of Wyoming Valley programs.
