Seeing local officers in new light in Schuylkill County

ORWIGSBURG, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A Schuylkill County community got a chance to see local officers in a whole new light while getting to see the new community police station.

Outside the Orwigsburg Police Department, neighbors gathered to enjoy games, food, and fun activities. Kids explored police vehicles, met officers, and played games.

The goal: to help the community connect with those who serve them, beyond emergencies.

This event also marked a big step forward, with a ribbon-cutting for a newly renovated police station on North Warren Street.

Officials say the updated building will help officers better serve residents and strengthen bonds for years to come.

"We wanna work closely with the youth so that they see police officers as somebody they can go to as friends and mentors. National Night Out is just another avenue for that," Orwigsburg Police Chief Vince McDonald told 28/22 News.

"I like how they keep the community safe," Kensley Witmier from Schuylkill Haven said.

Organizers say they hope events like this continue to grow and keep the community and officers connected for years ahead.
