Sale pending for several Commonwealth health facilities

(WBRE/WYOU) — Employees at three hospitals in northeastern Pennsylvania received notice of a possible sale in their future. The signed letter of intent lists two facilities in Scranton and one in Wilkes-Barre, along with all related care sites.

Citizens in northeastern Pennsylvania might be facing a major healthcare change after a letter of intent was signed by Commonwealth Health on Wednesday.

Regional Hospital of Scranton, Moses Taylor Hospital, and Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, along with their related care sites, might be acquired by Tenor Health Foundation.

Tenor Health was "formed to identify, own, manage, and turn around financially challenged hospitals."

"It sounds very helpful that we're moving in the right direction, but we do realize that it's not a done deal," Union Officer and Medical Lab Technologist Susan Wiggins told 28/22 News.

This is not the first time these hospitals were almost sold.

In July of last year, Woodbridge Healthcare also signed a letter of intent to acquire Commonwealth Health, but in November, the agreement was terminated.

"We've already lost many employees in the year-long wait for someone to buy us. I would hope they would have the interest of every employee in mind," Wiggins explained.

One woman told 28/22 News she has also noticed the changes over time, hoping things will turn around.

"They seem to be cutting staff, which is not good for patients obviously, if they're short of help," Carol Maclean from Wayne County said.

Through this uncertain time, Wiggins would like to see the priority be the workers and the communities they serve.

"I would hope that they would maintain all the good union jobs that are involved and make sure that they keep our facilities driving in our community," Wiggins added.

Employees are still waiting to hear more about this action, including a timeline of what they can expect to happen in the future.
