Driver accused of leading police on 6-mile high speed chase

BUTLER TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man is facing charges after police say he led officers on a 6-mile high-speed chase.

Butler Township Police have charged 22-year-old Aven Moronta, of Hazleton, after they say he led officers on a nearly 6-mile chase Sunday evening.

According to police, an officer was patrolling near the intersection of S. Hunter Highway and Stronecroft Road around 10:40 p.m. when he saw an SUV driving erratically. The SUV passed the officer and continued to drive at a high speed, passing other vehicles.

Police said they tried to stop Moronta; however, he increased his speed to between 100-120 mph. As stated in the release, Moronta suddenly stopped near the intersection of South Mountain Boulevard in Mountain Top and was arrested.

The criminal complaint stated Moronta said he was "sorry for doing that” and that he was "having a bad day."

Moronta was charged with fleeing or eluding a police officer, possessing a controlled substance, and traffic violations.

He was taken to the Luzerne County prison on a $7,500 bail.
