LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — 28/22 News got a first look at the future Firefighters' Memorial Bridge, the new link between Pittston and West Pittston.
Renderings of the bridge were shown at Tuesday's Luzerne County Council work session.
The bridge will feature specialized lighting that can shift with the seasons, weather, or special events.
Borough building packed amid data center controversy
It replaces the existing Firefighters' Memorial Bridge, formerly called the Water Street Bridge.
The bridge is named in honor of firefighters John Lombardo and Leonard Insalaco, who died in a fire in 1993.
Construction will likely begin in 2027 and could be completed by the end of 2028.
"It's going to definitely help businesses especially on Luzerne avenue because the one bridge being closed right now does take an impact on people taking a direct shot from Pittston to West Pittston, so we're all looking forward to it," said Harding resident Tanya Kasper.
The Firefighters' Memorial Bridge has been closed since August 2021.
