PA Treasurer Garrity announces gubernatorial run

28/22 NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — In that fiery campaign ad out on Monday, Treasurer Stacy Garrity announced she'll be running for governor of Pennsylvania next year. That ad took aim at current Governor Josh Shapiro, calling some of his decisions as governor "unconscionable."

Garrity has served as Pennsylvania's treasurer since 2021. Now, though, nearly halfway through her second term, she has her eyes set on the state's top spot, but victory won't come easily.

Before Garrity can go up against Governor Shapiro, she'll have to win the Republican primary.

Senator Doug Mastriano said shortly after her announcement, he feels that while she'll likely get the Republican endorsement, that endorsement could isolate his own supporters, hinting at the potential for a Mastriano ticket.

On Friday, Governor Shapiro talked about Garrity jumping into the race.

"The Republicans are gonna do their fight, I'm not gonna get into it, you know what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna keep creating jobs here in the commonwealth of PA, I'm gonna fund our kids' schools, I'm gonna make sure that we have more cops, and focus on doing my job of bringing Republicans and Democrats together to get stuff done," Governor Shapiro said.

"I will never embarrass Pennsylvania with scandals, unconscionable behavior, deleted emails, and cover-ups and a total lack of transparency like Shapiro has,"

If elected, Garrity would be the first female governor in the state.
