WYOMING, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — This summer marked 28/22's Third Annual Hunger Free Summer Campaign. We collected donations to feed families in need, and thanks to our viewers' generosity and Gerrity's The Fresh Grocer, we did just that.
When school is out for the summer, many kids lose access to meals they relied on, and their families are left struggling to provide.
28/22's Hunger Free Summer Campaign works to fight that.
"When we put together the whole concept of putting children first, feeding kids was a really big part of it, and being able to do that for six weeks during the summer has been terrific, so we're hopeful that it has helped a lot of people and it appears the community came out and definitely did their part," 28/22 News Vice President and General Manager Andrew Wyatt stated.
This year's six-week event generated more than $6,000 in cash and 9,187 pounds of food to be donated to families in need.
With the help of our viewers, we collected more than 1,400 bags, filled with non-perishable items that will go to people who are struggling financially.

"Pasta, pasta sauces, cereals, peanut butter and jelly, granola, protein, things of that nature, shelf-stable in particular because it's easier to keep longer in our pantries," CEO Weinberg, Northeast Regional Food Bank Executive Director Jennifer Warabak said.
28/22 works with CEO Weinberg Food Bank and our sponsors to put on this event that impacts so many.
The Weinberg Food Bank works with and gives the products to charitable organizations feeding the needy in NEPA.
"We have more than three hundred partner organizations. That includes school districts, libraries, municipalities, and volunteer-run organizations. So, we, as the food bank, provide them with the product, and they, in turn, distribute it out to the community," Warabak continued.
At each of our events at Gerrity's The Fresh Grocer and Gerrity's Ace Hardware, we welcomed donations from our viewers in the region.
Because of you, this event will leave a lasting impact on local community members. Without the help of our viewers, this event would not be possible.
