Scranton to demolish dangerous properties

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The City of Scranton announced plans to demolish multiple blighted properties throughout the late summer and fall.

Mayor Paige Cognetti's office released a list of planned demolitions on Tuesday.

"With these demolitions, we are nearing 100 properties taken down during our administration to help increase property values through the city and eliminate dangerous structures," Mayor Cognetti said.

The properties include:

231-233 Harrison Avenue

306 Beddoe Court

812 Rear Hampton Street

1848 Clearview Street

524 and 524 Rear Gibbons Street

402 Theodore Street, including a garage

1109 Poplar Street

The demolitions will be completed using Community Development Block Grant funds from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Brdaric Excavating was awarded the demolition contracts for the blighted properties, which total $151,300. Brdaric will also demolish a blighted property at 630 Clay Avenue using $49,000 in city funds.

The City of Scranton said it also plans to announce more property demolitions this year. A bid to demolish 110 Marion Avenue using city funds will open on Thursday.
