Taking polar plunge for cause at Tomato Festival

PITTSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Cold water and a good cause: The Pittston City Polar Plunge made its debut Saturday afternoon during the city's Tomato Festival.

The event, held just a block away from the parade route, is part of a special Olympics Pennsylvania's biggest fundraiser of the year.

Organizers say about 35 people took the leap on Saturday, with the pool even sporting tomato floaties to match the festival theme.

Organizers say the event has raised at least $1,500 as of early Saturday; money that will help send local Special Olympics athletes to state competitions and provide uniforms and training opportunities.

"I have I think got into the tomato spirit, it's really good to understand what we're coming here for, the good food, the good community, the energy, so working with the city of Pittston has been remarkable and allowing them to have this space has been a lot of fun meeting with them," Special Olympics PA Northeast Region Regional Development Director Sarah Driscoll told 28/22 News.

They got their mobile Bear Force One plunge unit last year and will travel to events across the state.
