WILLIAMSPORT, LYCOMING COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A Lycoming County school is now facing a federal lawsuit after a student was strapped to a backboard in class. The district confirms the teacher has resigned.
A lawsuit was filed against Williamsport Area School District this past Friday. The suit states the teacher strapped a rising senior to a backboard.
According to the suit, Richard Caschera was hired by the school district in May to teach the district's homeland security program.
The suit says at the end of May, a high school junior had asked to use the bathroom multiple times during a test, but was denied by Caschera each time. The student eventually put his head down on his desk.
Shooting under investigation after shots fired
According to the suit, Caschera had other students in the class put smelling salts under the students' nose.
After the student did not react to the salts, Caschera had the students pin him to a backboard.
The suit says the student could not move and had a strap at or just below his neck, and only after the student was coughing loudly, he was released.
Later, Caschera reportedly "Did not see the wrong in what he did."
28/22 News received a statement from the school district.
We do not comment on pending litigation.
