Residents enjoy summer's end at PA state park

WYOMING, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — As the summer comes to a close, many campgrounds and state parks will see a dip in activity, but not before the holiday weekend. Northeastern Pennsylvania's state parks have a steady amount of foot traffic these days.

A lot of people were in a Luzerne County park to soak up the last few weeks of warm weather.

Summer activities and hobbies will soon start to slow down, especially those that include being outdoors.

Many of Frances Slocum State Park's visitors have been here regularly throughout the warmer months, like one man and his dog.

"We walk other areas around Kingston township, but mostly this is his favorite area. In fact, he won't let me not go. He knows what time to go, around 10, 11:00 in the morning, he comes and gets me, and we got to go," Kingston Mike Hilinski said.

Hilinski and his dog Charles see the park when it's packed and when it's empty.

He says Labor Day weekend often marks the end of the busy season.

"The holidays, yeah, there's a lot of people here, and especially when the pool is open. There was a lot of people during that high heat. But, during the wintertime, we basically have the place to ourselves," Hilinski continued.

He might have company, though, as one woman is determined to keep this routine with her dog.

"Rain or shine, yeah. No matter what the temperature, we're here. Bundling up or not wearing too much clothing to stay cool," Suzanne Krispin from Dallas said.

A father and son duo, the Majors, are there every week, determined to make the most of the time before they're too busy.

"We're fishing. We're enjoying the last of the summer before he starts school, figured we'll get out on the lake while the other kids are at school. It's just me and him today trying to catch some trophies," Alexander and Mike Major from Bear Creek explained.

While they'll miss the park during the winter months, Mike and his son are grateful for what their local state park brought them.

After the holiday weekend, Frances Slocum's most loyal visitors are expecting some quiet days at the park.
