Faculty protest outside new building dedication

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A new building is now dedicated and blessed at the University of Scranton.

Weiss Hall, named after Robert and Marilyn Weiss, is the university's center for workforce development, applied research, and outreach.

A crowd gathered inside the building for remarks and tours on Wednesday, but the event was shadowed a bit, as about 50 faculty members stood outside Weiss Hall protesting with signs that read "Fair faculty contract now."

"It's just incredible, they even have a space for young kids that are just starting out, that need help, and they can come here and get advice. It's mind-boggling," Marilyn A. Weiss told 28/22 News.

"We came here today because we wanted to get some public exposure. Many people, I think, didn't know about the situation we're in, people within the university community and without, so we just wanted to be visible," Michawl Friedman, Professor of English and Theatre at the University of Scranton, said.

A spokesperson for the university says they value their professors deeply and hope to reach a fair contract deal soon.
