LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— If you are driving on the highway in Scranton this week, you could see some longer commutes. 28/22 News Reporter Connor Coar was along Interstate 81 and has more about what is causing the traffic.
There are lane restrictions for shoulder work between exits 178 and 185 along Interstate 81 for the next four days: Monday, September 8, through Thursday, September 11 on Interstate 81.
Pennsylvania state budget nearly 70 days overdue; Home health care workers rally
Monday saw lots of cones being placed, lots of brake lights, and longer commutes than people are used to along the interstate.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) sent out a press release on Monday, encouraging drivers to take alternate routes, when possible, to avoid delays in different spots in Northeast PA.
For the next two weeks, from 6:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., the state's Department of Transportation will be doing shoulder cutting.
Lane restrictions are in place for the nearly eight miles of road between the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport and the President Joseph R. Biden Jr. Expressway.
At the River Street exit, just before the Biden Expressway, 28/22 News spoke with workers at the gas station off the exit.
They tell 28/22 News that the complaints have already begun.
"We pay taxes here, we wanna see the streets and make sure they get repaired, and it seems like every other day there's a big pothole somewhere construction. It just takes a lot of time on our commute to get into work and get back to home," Victor Burns, a cashier at a gas station off of River Street exit, explained.
