Charlie Kirk murder investigation gains momentum

(WBRE/WYOU) — The investigation into the murder of political activist Charlie Kirk is intensifying.

The FBI released a photo of a person of interest. The I-Team's Andy Mehalshick speaks with a longtime prosecutor about the case and challenges investigators are facing.

Also, a special podcast on the Kirk investigation will stream tonight at 9 p.m. on the 28/22 Now App.

The murder of Charlie Kirk has people all around the nation and in Northeastern Pennsylvania watching and waiting for who did it and why.

28/22 News talked with a longtime prosecutor from our area about the case.

Charlie Kirk was murdered in front of thousands of people, all of them potential witnesses who could help identify the killer.

A former prosecutor tells me investigators are taking this one step at a time.

Charlie Kirk was shot to death as he responded to a question about mass shootings.

The large crowd ran for their lives.

"Whatever you think of Charlie Kirk, he was murdered. He was murdered in front of thousands of people. This is a murder investigation," stated Jarrett Ferentino, former prosecutor.

I spoke with former Luzerne County prosecutor Jarrett Ferentino.

He has prosecuted all kinds of crimes including homicides and active shooter cases. He says the kirk murder investigation presents unique challenges.

"Well it's a challenge because, in a sense, you have to recreate the scene. You are to bring some of those folks back. They have to be willing to provide information and you know there's concerns. There are people that think I want to stay out of it. I didn't come here to get involved with a large scale assassination investigation," said Ferentino.

Ferentino says investigators are being very methodical.

"But what's happening right now Andy is right now there is a review of technology. There are video cameras everywhere, which require all of the investigators to review those and go through the drudgery of finding even prior evidence. Prior video evidence that may be significant," explained Ferentino.

I interviewed Ferentino for a special Mehalshick Files podcast on the 28/22 Now app. He says cell phone records may help track the shooter.

"What's odd, the cell phone towers revealing is also a comment of the investigation. Although there were a lot of people, it is a confined geographical area and you can glean from the cell towers whose phone was hitting, and whether or not that individual was in that area," added Ferentino.
