Taking steps through Kirby Park for Walk for Epilepsy

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Dozens of people are taking steps toward a world without seizures. Roughly 100 walkers made their way through Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre on Saturday for the Annual Walk for Epilepsy.

About one in 26 people will be diagnosed with the disorder in their lifetime.

The walk through the years has helped raise funds for a community epilepsy center that opened last year in Kingston.

It serves as a site for a whole host of services to help families navigate challenges.

"It can affect their mood, their memory, their cognition, their social interactions, their independence. It's a really hard neurological disorder to live with, but we want to make sure that people know that they're not alone and that we have a lot of support so that they can live their best life," Programs and Advocacy VP and Epilepsy of NEPA Co-Organizer Rena Loughlin stated.

"It really warms my heart seeing so many people coming here supporting people with epilepsy, supporting like, just bringing in a piece of their day help," Andrew Gierszal with Lives with Epilepsy, Mountain Top, told 28/22 News.

Funds raised on Saturday go toward things such as free educational resources, support groups, and first aid training.
