Residents living along proposed powerline raise new concerns

HAZLE TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — People living along a proposed 12-mile PPL power line are raising new concerns. A town hall meeting brought together residents, lawmakers, and activists to discuss the transmission line cutting through several municipalities in Luzerne County.

Many property owners in the Hazleton area say they fear their land will lose value, their daily lives will be disrupted, and their voices will be ignored.

Representatives from the activist group Alliance to Stop the Line were helping to guide residents and share resources, while local politicians addressed questions about transparency and safety.

They also talked about who benefits from the project.

"The biggest concern I would say has been this level of secrecy around this project and what it's for and who's going to benefit from it, that's the biggest concern that the community has," Representative Jamie Walsh said.

"They should take the public's concerns, the public's opinions, in concern when they're developing anything," Sugarloaf Township Property Owner Robert Pope explained.

Residents say they will continue pressing for answers, while lawmakers and activists say they are listening and will provide updates as the project moves forward.
