How to recycle e-waste in Wilkes-Barre

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The city of Wilkes-Barre is holding an event to allow residents to get rid of e-waste and private documents.

The mayor's office announced a drive-through e-recycling and paper shredding event for city residents.

The event will be held on Monday, October 6, from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., as well as Thursday, October 9, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Wilkes-Barre Public Works Facility, according to the mayor's office.

Local borough looking to clean up blight for new business

All participants must bring proof of residency in Wilkes-Barre, such as a driver's license. Participants must remain inside their cars for the event. Businesses are not able to participate.

The city is partnering with Responsible Recycling Solutions (RSS) for Electronics Recycling and partnering with Paper Eaters Document Destruction Service for document shredding.

Items that can be recycled for free are as follows:

Desktop & Laptop Computers

DVD Players & VCRs

Keyboards & Mice

Gaming Systems

Printers/Fax Machines

String Christmas Lights

Cables & Cords

Microwaves & Small Appliances

Cell Phone & Laptop Batteries

Metal Items

Calculators & Adding Machines

Audio Visual Equipment

Telephones & Cell Phones* (*Please Remove Cell Phone Batteries)

Exercise Equipment (Metal)

UPS Battery Backups

Car Batteries (sealed lead acid)

Toner & Ink Cartridges

Metal Bed Frames & Rain spouting

Filing Cabinets

Lawn Mowers

Paper Shredders

Some items can be recycled for a fee, payable through cash or checks payable to RSS only. Such items and the price to recycle them are as follows:

Computer Monitors - $20

Televisions under 42" CRT or Flat Screen - $40

TV over 42"Flat Screen, in a wooden console, projection type, or TV Tube Only or Broken Screen TV - $60

Floor Copiers - $20

Console Stereos (in cabinet) - $35

Offsite Hard Drive destruction services - $10 per drive and includes a Certification of Destruction

For the document shredding portion of the event, participants are allowed a maximum of three boxes of documents per vehicle. Items accepted for document shredding include:

Bank statements

Outdated medical records

Pay stubs

Old bills or receipts

Credit card offers

Credit Cards

Tax returns older than seven years

Items that are NOT accepted for document shredding include:

Newspapers

Binders of any type: 3-ring, plastic, spiral, metal

Plastic document covers

Hanging file folders with metal support bars

Metal binder clips

Books, either hardback or paperback

Magazines, catalogues, or newspapers

Film or photographs

Residents are asked to check the boxes of papers for foreign objects that could potentially damage the shredding equipment.
