SOUTH ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local car show is steering support toward an animal shelter in need. More than 100 cars were displayed at the event near Clarks Summit. Hundreds of spectators showed up to see show cars and, of course, adorable pets from the shelter available for adoption.
Dozens of cars off the highway with their hoods up and their chrome shining. They took over a parking lot across the street from Griffin Pond Animal Shelter on Sunday for the Third Annual Mutts & Motors Car Show.
"This is an event that a lot of people look forward to. You know, people that are interested in cars come out and have a good time, and then we have a lot of the spectators that come out as well, so it's a fun time," Griffin Pond Animal Shelter Executive Director Ashley Wolo told 28/22 News.
Fun for the exhibitors, too. One participant brought a "pony car" he's been working on for years.
"I brought a '66 Mustang, I bought it in 2018 right after I lost my father to colon cancer," Lake Ariel event participant Joe Roedel said.
Roedel shows up for this car show in particular every year, making it a tradition he's proud of.
"It's a good cause, you know what I mean? How can I say it, dogs can't tell us what's the matter with them, so we help them out. I had a couple dogs in my life, and I loved all my dogs," Roedel continued.

The event is meant to shed light on the expenses that Griffin Pond takes on to care for the amount of animals they see.
"We take on a lot of medical cases, a lot of cruelty cases, neglect cases, so keeping our medical fund funded is really important and crucial to be able to do what we do and to continue helping those animals in need. We take in over a hundred animals every single month, so, you know, having the funding to do that is so crucial," Wolo added.
The message reaches the locals, especially through events like these, where they can help out with those funds while having a good time..
"The community always rallies behind us, and they're so supportive of us; we're so thankful for that. That's why it's so important to continue doing that, continue supporting Griffin Pond, because again, it's going back to all the animals in our community," Wolo stated.
Community members are sure they will continue showing their support for years to come.
"As long as I have the car, I'll be back, and I'm going to have this car until the day I die, I think," said Roedel.
The event also featured food and raffle baskets, all to raise funds for Griffin Pond Animal Shelter in Lackawanna County.
