Police respond to threat at school, kids evacuated

EXETER, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — An area high school was evacuated early this morning over what is being called an "unverified threat."

State troopers responded to the Wyoming Area Secondary Center after it went into lockdown. This was after a written threat was found on the stall of a girls' bathroom in the school.

The threat was related to a weapon, according to a press release from the school obtained by 28/22 news.

The move was taken as a precaution. Students began evacuating around 11:00 a.m. The incident only involved the secondary school, while the rest of the district operated normally.

This is the first safety scare since the district introduced new "Yondr" bags to limit cell phone use in class, just three days into the school year.

The district notified families through its communication system. All after-school activities and Tuesday's school board meeting have been postponed.

The state police K-9 unit was on the premises to conduct a search. The unit did not find any items of concern.

The secondary center will reopen on Wednesday for normal operations. Administration and law enforcement are continuing to review this matter in Luzerne County.
