14th Junior League of Scranton's Touch-a-Truck event

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Shift into high gear with something extra special and free for families, an annual Touch-a-Truck event returns in Lackawanna County.

Toys are being brought to life for kids in Scranton.

Massive vehicles and heavy machinery like this one are going to be on display at Nay Aug Park on Saturday, all for a touch-a-truck event.

“It’s a really fun day for children and families to come out, spend some time together, get to see the trucks, meet the drivers, and learn a little bit more about the different industries in our area,” shared Country Comonie Fino, chair of comm. research at the Junior League of Scranton.

The event is put on by the Junior League of Scranton, now in its 14th year.

“The payoff at the end of the day is the smiles on all the children’s faces. It’s really a heartwarming event,” said Gretchen Wintermantel, Touch-a-Truck event co-chair, Junior League of Scranton.

Kids can do activities and explore more than 50 different types of trucks and equipment from a slew of Scranton agencies, such as police, fire, and public works.

“Touch-a-Truck is such a great experience for kids to be able to go and sit in those vehicles, talk to our great teams that keep us safe every single day, so we love this event and we’re happy to participate,” said Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti.

Teaming up with other organizations, non-perishable food items will be collected for Friends of the Poor.

A chance for families to learn about food insecurity and how they can help.

“Let people know that there are opportunities, whether it’s through volunteering or whether it’s through just donating some non-perishable items. We do have a lot of events coming up with the holidays,” shared Antonio Berardi, senior food program manager at Friends of the Poor.

The event runs from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. on Saturday and is free to the community.

“Just come in for free and enjoy a lot of free activities and make some memories and lasting impressions for years to come with their family members,” said Antonia Cerda-Bevan, Touch-a-Truck event co-chair, Junior League of Scranton.

“We like to say that Touch-a-Truck puts children's imaginations into overdrive,” said Fino.

The Junior League of Scranton’s Touch-a-Truck event is Saturday. There will be a sensory-friendly quiet hour from 11:00 a.m. to noon.
