SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A fundraiser for a non-profit medical system is why dozens and dozens of people laced up their sneakers Sunday morning in Scranton.
Nearly 200 runners and walkers were eager for the sound of the starting airhorn at Veterans Memorial Stadium. They participated in Team Allied Services 5K and All-Abilities Walk.
Cheerleaders helped boost the energy and vibes for participants and even those who did not run.
Organizers consider the event a celebration of communities, abilities, and inclusion.
"Look at these faces here. We need to support services here in northeastern Pennsylvania. Team Allied, well, Allied Services does a fantastic job," Greenfield Township 5K Runner Krista Smith told 28/22 News.

"You see a lot about children with disabilities. It's a huge part of what we do, and we need the visibility and the awareness because we need to raise money to sustain these programs for about 1,200 children each year that are cared for at Allied Services," Allied Services Integrated Services Vice President Jim Brogna explained.
"I just love the opportunity to participate in Team Allied Services and You, supporting the people right here in northeast Pennsylvania that need it most with the specialized services that are offered at Allied Services," Shane Bradley from Swoyersville, who won First Place in the Men's Division, said.
Organizers hoped to raise a few thousand dollars at today's event.
Team Allied Services will participate in the TCS New York City Marathon in November.
