Officials identify driver killed in crash after car bursts into flames

KIDDER TOWNSHIP, CARBON COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Carbon County Coroner's Office has identified the driver who died after officials stated he hit a tree, causing his car to burst into flames.

On September 26, the Carbon County Coroner’s Office responded to a crash on Route 940 in Kidder Township.

The coroner stated a vehicle left the roadway, hit a tree, and, on impact, burst into flames. First responders tried to extricate the victim but were unsuccessful.

The Coroner's Office on Monday night identified the victim as 31-year-old Nick J. Berkheimer from Hazleton City.

Officials add Berkheimer was pronounced dead at 10:40 p.m. by Chief Deputy Coroner Jason T. Smith.

The release explains the cause of death was thermal burns and blunt force injuries due to a motor vehicle accident. Authorities added the manner of death was ruled accidental.
