School teams up with food bank to give food to over 200 families

THROOP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Lackawanna County School District is giving back with its Third Annual Children's Produce Market. The school is teaming up with the CEO Weinberg Food Bank to provide food for over 200 families.

28/22 News Reporter Colby Hughes was on hand to see how volunteers are prepping for their first produce market of the school year.

Mid Valley School District's varsity football team helped to fill up the boxes that are now being distributed to families that signed up.

Football players from Mid Valley School District volunteered on Monday to fill up boxes of food.

It's the school's Third Annual Children's Produce Market, which helps feed families during the school year.

"Once a month, students can come out here and volunteer to help put together these boxes. We do a whole bunch of food from produce to snacks to drinks, and then later, the families who signed up can come pick it up, and it's all free of charge," Mid Valley High School Sophomore Emma Campbell told 28/22 News.

This program is not income-dependent. Anyone who signs up can get food from the school. Volunteers are more than eager to help 200 families at each event.

"They just need that little bit of extra help because maybe they're not quite making it from paycheck to paycheck, but it's still something that they can have and know that it's available to them," Mid Valley High School Teacher Susan SanMartin stated.

Since the first produce market in 2023, the number of people signed up to receive food has grown.

"We have seen more families coming simply because they need the help," SanMartin explained.

The students are happy to meet that need and support a community that always supports them.

"Even for the sporting events, the community comes out and supports everybody. I think it's amazing for us to give back to them. I think that's also amazing, so I'm very happy about that, that we're able to give back to them too," Mid Valley High School Senior Nicholas Pinto said.

"I love helping the people I know, people I don't know, and being able to do this is just another opportunity to get, and I'm so thankful to be able to help with this, and I'm so glad that our school is doing something so well," Campbell added.

Anyone interested in signing up for the next produce market on October 27th can go online for more information.
