WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Wilkes-Barre Fire Department held a screening event for its firefighters and those a part of neighboring departments.

Esophageal Cancer is one of the deadliest forms of cancer. 80% of patients have died from it.

Firefighters have a 62% higher chance of getting the cancer, according to Lucid Diagnostics, who administered the screening in Wilkes-Barre.

Getting screened for this type of cancer can help detect it early enough to be treated and save a life.

"Prevention or early recognition, it could be fixed in most and it can't be fixed sometimes if you get really late, so I think that we're just trying to let our actions speak louder than words," City of Wilkes-Barre Fire Chief Jay Delaney explained.

Administrators from Lucid Diagnostics say that if you have three of the seven risk factors, it's recommended that you get tested.

Factors include heartburn, if you are a white male, and over the age of 50.
