One dead, home destroyed after Wayne County fire

BUCKINGHAM TOWNSHIP, WAYNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Firefighters spent hours battling a fire that left one person dead and a Wayne County home in ruins on Thursday.

Neighbors told 28/22 News that they saw flames coming from a home on Fallbrook Road in Buckingham Township and called 911 around 11 a.m. Thursday morning.

79-year-old Donald Herbert, the home's owner, was pronounced dead at the scene around 2 p.m., according to the Wayne County Coroner's Office. An autopsy for Herbert is planned for Saturday, and his cause of death is under investigation.

Man displaced, fire destroys Luzerne County home

Crews from multiple fire departments in both New York and Pennsylvania responded to the scene.

Firefighters pumped water into tanker trucks from a nearby pond to combat the flames.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
